Dev Blog #37

Hello Survivors!

We hope you have been enjoying the first glimpses from the Next Gen version of Rust Console Edition, there’s a lot more that will be revealed as we get closer to the release. So sit back and enjoy what’s coming your way!

Bringing Rust to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was no small feat. Optimizing the game for these platforms while staying within hardware limitations, especially memory constraints has been a significant challenge. While we’ve pushed the current version as far as it can go, adding more features like land vehicles, minicopters or bigger maps would compromise the gameplay experience.

We know how much you want these additions, and to be honest, so do we! However, older-generation consoles are already at their limit when running the game, and adding features like that on top of what we already have, would cause serious FPS drops.

A native Gen 9 version of Rust Console Edition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S is clearly the solution. This new version will deliver better visuals, improved performance and open up possibilities for many of the features you’ve asked for!

Q&As

In the past few weeks we have answered some frequently asked questions from the community and would like to recap on them just to bring everyone up to speed, in case you missed it!

Q - Can I use my current Rust Console Edition account on the next-gen version of the game?
A - Yes, your existing account can be used on the next gen version of Rust Console Edition, ensuring all your progress and purchases are retained.

Q - I own Rust Coins and skins on the current gen version of Rust Console Edition, will these remain in the next gen version?
A - Yes! All your in-game purchases including your Rust Coins and cosmetics will be carried over to the next gen version. Your skins will be carried forward and will look more crisp!

Q - I already own a copy of Rust Console Edition, will I need to purchase the next gen version?
A - We are currently working out the best ways to thank the existing Rust Console Edition players for their support through the years. Stay tuned, we will share more details about it next month.

Q - I am still on an older generation console, what would Rust Console Edition look like for me once the next gen version has been released? Will future updates still come to old gen consoles?
A - You can keep playing the original console version of Rust (PS4 & Xbox One), and server wipes will still happen as usual. However, all future updates and new features will only come to the next-gen version. We might still add improvements or fixes to the original version if needed, but this is not guaranteed.

Q - Will I be able to move my Xbox progress to Playstation and vice versa?
A - No, cross platform progress transfer is not an option in Rust Console Edition.

Q - Will there be an anti cheat with the new gen version?
A - Yes, we are tracking cheaters at the moment and should have a system online for launch which will enable us to start automatically banning players.

In the coming weeks you can expect some more answers for the questions we’ve gathered from the community since the announcement of the Next Gen version. These will include more info about upgrades for existing players, performance stats, official server capacity and map size, Public Test Branch, Community Servers and more.

Update 2.11

Easter Event

The Easter Event will go live with the monthly wipe and will be active on official servers until April 17th.

Community Server Changes and Additions

Donut Island is coming to Community Servers!

A brand-new custom map, ‘Donut Island’, is rolling out with this update as a preset for Community Servers! If you are a Community Server owner, you can simply select it from the Preset Menu and jump right in, no setup needed and the map is not customizable - what you see is what you get. It’s a fresh new map type with plenty of fun twists, new paths and surprises.
See you on the Donut?

A feedback thread will be live on the Discord channel once the Map is live, we will update this Dev Blog with the link once it’s up!

Tech Tree tier banning on Community Servers

Server owners can now ban whole branches in the tech tree so admins don’t have to individually ban single items by upgrading existing banitem and unbanitem commands for categories. Refer to the Item Management Wiki Page for more details!

Extended Modifiers

Newer convars have been added to allow certain items to now be modified independently.
Refer to the Modifiers Wiki Page for more info!

Custom Authorization Tiers

Server owners can set commands to be usable by any authorization tier. Refer to the Custom Auth Tiers Wiki Page for more info!
